DAVID at NAB 2015

DAVID will be present at the NAB Exhibition 2015 in Las Vegas (April 13-16, 2015) – the premier annual technology event for the creation, management and delivery of entertainment and news content worldwide. The project was selected to present at NAB Labs Futures Park (booth N9629), where research results important for the future of the field are exhibited.

  • DIGITAL of JOANNEUM RESEARCH demonstrates new, essence based damage detection tools for Digital BETACAM™ dropouts, field order errors and progressive / interlaced / pull-down errors, integrated in the essence quality checking system VidiCert, addressing archive migration and video production quality control applications. Novel results for noise suppression and Digital BETACAM™ dropout repair are presented.
  • HS-ART Digital will show its semi-automatic video field issues repair tool for the first time at NAB. Furthermore the new Digital BETACAM™ dropout repair and noise filters, integrated into the DIAMANT-Film Restoration software, will be shown. The noise filter addresses the whole video and film post production market working with digital born material as well as with digitized content.
  • Cube-Tec will present a high-speed solution to solve interoperability problems with MXF media files in a fully automatic way. This new technology is called MXF Legalizer and is part of the Cube Workflow Framework. MXF Legalizer checks MXF files for standards conformance. In addition MXF format variants that are known to be the reason for interoperability issues in typical file-based broadcast chains are also fixed. Expandable rule-based decision logic is used to convert MXF files into the selected target MXF flavour.
  • The IT Innovation Centre of the University of Southampton will demonstrate a Business Process Risk management framework prototype (BPRisk) that allows users to manage preservation workflows with respect to risks that threaten the long-term preservation of digital AV content. BPRisk includes risk modelling and workflow simulation to expose key vulnerabilities. This enables decision-makers to target and justify investment in effective risk management strategies.

DAVID will be present at the GPU Technology Conference 2015 with the talk

GPU-Accelerated Undecimated Wavelet Transform for Film and Video Denoising
Hermann Fürntratt, Hannes Fassold

A highly efficient GPU implementation of the Undecimated Wavelet Transform will be presented there. Furthermore it will be shown how it is applied within the noise repair algorithm developed within the DAVID project. This algorithm is able to deal with very different kinds of noise like film grain noise, electronic video noise and digital sensor noise in a highly automated way. The GPU Technology Conference (March 17-20, San Jose, USA) is the world’s largest GPU developer conference with hundreds of talks and posters from all scientific fields.

JOANNEUM RESEARCH – DIGITAL is the single research institute in Austria which has been awarded by NVIDIA with the title of a CUDA Research Center

DAVID will be present at the FIAT/IFTA 2014 conference with the workshop:

Digital Video Damage in Archives: Understand, Prevent, Detect, and Repair – Results from the DAVID Project

Peter Schallauer, Jean-Hugues Chenot, Jörg Houpert, Christoph Bauer

In this workshop we will look for answers to the following questions: What types of damage are common in digital archive content and workflows and what are its consequences on the re-usability of that content? Which solutions are there to detect and repair MXF errors, e.g. in D10 files and workflows? Which solutions are there to detect and repair video essence damage, e.g. Digital BETACAM dropouts, noise, various field errors, and for improving the picture quality beyond its original state, e.g. de-blurring and super-resolution? And finally, how to prevent digital damage in the future?

The DAVID project partners are looking forward to meet you in Amsterdam!
